Let's Review Doom Patrol vol. 1: Brick by Brick

Image
First off, I should point out that while I haven't read every Doom Patrol comic ever, I feel like I've read enough to understand the basics and know quite a few of the characters, which was a big help in reading this series. Prior to this series by writer Gerard Way, artist Nick Derington and colorist Tamra Bonvillain my reading of the Doom Patrol consisted of the Grant Morrison run on the team and the Keith Giffen series. That helped in two significant ways while reading the current volume: 1) I knew that I should go in expecting it to be weird and possibly not make sense at first and 2) Way bringing back characters like Flex Mentallo, Crazy Jane and Danny the Street (now Danny the Ambulance) was appreciated rather than confusing. And that's the thing here. Someone online asked me recently if they should pick up the new Doom Patrol even though they had never read a DP comic in their life. I suggested they should read the Grant Morrison run first before reading this o...

Superman Day

Today, June 12th, is considered Superman Day. So here are some of my favorite Superman stories. "For the Man Who Has Everything" (Superman Annual #11, 1984) - I think this story is on a lot of people's list for favorite Superman story. Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman arrive at the Fortress of Solitude only to find Superman has fallen prey to a plant named the Black Mercy that traps it's victims in their greatest desire/fantasy. Of course, this is part of a revenge scheme by an alien named Mongul.  Some fans like it because it shows Krypton as it would have been if it hadn't been destroyed. The real fun, however, comes from Superman battling Mongul and Alan Moore's descriptions of how colossal the fight is and how great it looks drawn by Dave Gibbons. There are also some great moments for Wonder Woman and Robin (Jason Todd). The story was adapted for an episode of the animated series "Justice League Unlimited" and even an episode of the current live-...

TV Marathon

I had another blog I was going to write today, but THERE IS SO MUCH TELEVISION TO WATCH. At the moment I'm binge-watching season 5 of Orange is the New Black (which has been pretty good so far). Later tonight is the two-hour season 3 premiere of Dark Matter followed by the season 2 premiere of Wynonna Earp. Tomorrow night has the season 5 premiere of Orphan Black and a new episode of Doctor Who. Going to be a good weekend for television.

First Encounters

I'll be honest. While I love comic books as a medium the majority of what I read is DC. Probably because the first comics I owned/read were The Flash, Firestorm and All-Star Squadron. When I first got into comics they were pretty hard to get. I'm from a small town so we've never had a comic shop here (nearest one is now is 8 hours away, though for a while we did have one in a town about 2 hours from here). I had to rely on convenience stores or drug stores to get comic books and even then it was hit or miss as to what titles would be available. Luckily I had a neighbor who was slightly older than myself who had a bit more knowledge of comic books. Through him I learned about Green Lantern's weakness to anything yellow, the fact that Aquaman needed contact with water once an hour and the effects that the various colors of kryptonite would have on Superman. However, as my friend grew out of comics I grew more in to them. Some of the first comics I read as a kid were som...

Let's Just Get This Out of the Way...

I haven't read every single comic book ever. I haven't seen every single movie or TV show ever. I'm here to talk about stuff I love from comic books to movies and TV shows to (maybe) novels and music. This is my blog. These are my thoughts and opinions. You're entitled to your own. I'm just doing this for fun. Right now my plans for the blog include (but are not limited to): My favorite [insert name of comic book character here] stories. Movie reviews (new films and classics). Reviewing episodes of favorite TV shows (including Dark Matter, Wynonna Earp, the CW superhero shows, the Netflix superhero shows,  and upcoming TV shows like Star Trek: Discovery and The Orville). So why a blog and not a podcast or a Youtube channel? Well, I can't afford all the podcasting equipment (I'm guessing. I have no idea how much it costs) and my face is too ugly for Youtube. Plus, I like writing (for the most part) as I can edit and re-write as I go without having to ...
